About

Lea Athene

Hi, I’m Lea Athene, a designer and tailor based in Brussels, Leuven and Sittard. Ever since I was young I’ve loved dressing up and playing with fabric and yarn. I was very lucky my mother kept a lot of her old clothes, and it soon inspired me to start my own collection of what were mostly ‘nice-to-touch’ fabrics, often in the form of scarfs and hats. In fact, my mom gave me a beautiful piece of bordeaux silk as a baby, with which I couldn’t stop fiddling.

At 14 I sewed my first real piece of clothing on the machine. Sitting on the floor of my room, using my knee to work the peddle, because I didn’t have a desk or table, I turned my eldest sister’s trousers into a top. Soon after this, the ‘I-have-nothing-to-wear’ phase started, so I started creating garments from scratch. I drew my inspiration from a variety of things: the fabrics themselves, natural shapes and architecture I came across on my walks, the human form…. Once I had started my bachelor in Art history and Archaeology, I found that the styles, shapes and designs I came across also started influencing my work.

I’ve been making clothes for 14 years now, using fabrics I find in shops and markets, pieces I’ve knitted or crocheted myself, or a combination of the two. I have a strong tendency towards natural fibers such as linen, silk, wool and cotton, and I love working with plain colours. As is the case for many autodidacts, years of trial and error and lots of practice have allowed me to gain ample experience and expertise in designing clothes myself, drawing out the patterns, and using various sewing techniques to put them together.

Personally, I’m attracted to clothing that makes me feel confident as well as comfortable, whether I’m going for casual, sexy or elegant. Furthermore, I think it’s important to know that the clothes you wear have been made within a safe and healthy environment, and are available for a fair price. And, of course, knowing that they were made with passion is a nice extra 😉 The clothes we wear say a lot about us: directly, indirectly, intentionally and unintentionally.

Concept

The clothes presented in the wardrobe are all unique (in size, model, colour and/or fabric), and designed and made by me. Some pieces are for sale, others have been made on commission, but all of them are there to inspire. The beauty of this concept is, after all, that you can order your own unique garment. It’s up to you to decide how much you want to be involved in the designing process:

Keep it simple

Have you found a piece you like, fabric and all? Fill in the product form and I’ll contact you as soon as possible. Be quick though, I usually don’t buy a lot of the same fabric at once 😉 Do you like everything about the model except the colour? No problem, have a look at the colours here, or contact me!

Choice of fabric

We can also give the design a more personal look by using a fabric of your own choice. For me, there’s nothing as fun and stimulating as fabric-shopping! Take your mom, friend, sister, brother out to a fabric-shop and treat yourselves!

Berger, Kazernestraat 84, 1000 Brussel
La Maison du Tissus, Chaussée d’Ixelles 117, 1050 Ixelles
Maison dorée, Chaussée d’Ixelles 14, 1050 Ixelles
Nostex Joyce, Waversesteenweg 790, 1040 Etterbeek
Chien Vert, Rue du Chien Vert 2, 1080 Bruxelles (there are two shops just a few steps away from each other, one with more exclusive fabrics, the other with the normal collection and fabrics on sale).
Sunday market at Midi, Brussels

It’s important to buy the right kind and amount of fabric for each model. Fill in the product form, and I’ll get back to you with the necessary information. Then, just drop it off and I can get started. Once you’ve found a design that suits you well, buy a couple of different fabrics (for summer, for winter), then have it made multiple times, so you have things to wear throughout the year!

Made to measure

The next option is to order it in your own personal size. If you have trouble finding garments that fit you well, this is definitely the way to go. Personally I have difficulties with trousers and dresses for example, because my proportions are different from the ones of the confection-sizes. Make an appointment with me so I can take your measurements. Once I have them I can apply them to all designs!

First model in personal size + €18,-
Additional model in personal size + €11,50

Alternative design

You can also alter the design slightly, by changing the length of the skirt or sleeves for example. Or do you like the skirt of one model, and the top or neckline of another? Use your imagination to give my designs your own personal touch: contact me, and we’ll make it work!

Personal design

Are these options not enough for you and would you like to take it all one step further? Do you have a special occasion coming up? Have you always had an idea in mind for a piece of clothing but never knew what to do with it? Or do you simply want something awesome and unique to wear? Let’s sit down together, figure out what you feel comfortable in, what it is that you would like to express with your garment, and create a unique piece made especially for you. Have a look at a few of the pieces I’ve made in the past couple of years and get inspired!
